# AI Is Not Just Chat. Cowork Apps Are Where the Action Happens.

Published: 2026-07-13

Practitioner commentary on where the real AI work happens for analyst / builder workflows - the Cowork apps (Claude Cowork and now ChatGPT Work). These are the desktop apps that come as part of your Claude / ChatGPT subscription, and they do not just chat - they run code, pull data from external sources and CSVs, analyze it, and build reports and decks - basically do the work. Post plainly points out this is not one-golden-prompt magic - you still need to know what you are doing, provide context, guide, iterate, and most importantly validate results; the buck stops with you and the apps are just tools. Links two go-deeper resources: a 23-page guide on what Claude Cowork can do (author has just tried ChatGPT Work and confirms it can do the same things) and the Claude for Analytics hub. Quick-start tips section: install the desktop app and try things; if you want structured onboarding, share the guide PDF with the Cowork app and have it tutor you with test cases; the Anthropic docs at claude.com/resources/tutorials are simple language + good examples, and the author's favourites are curated in the Analytics hub. Second half - practitioner notes on when to use the other Claude flavors instead. Claude in Excel: stick to it for Excel work, far more efficient than doing Excel through Cowork. Claude in PowerPoint: efficient for PPT, but lately the author has stopped using PowerPoint - prepares decks in HTML from Cowork or Claude Code and converts to PDF, because HTML-to-PPT is wonky on font and placement and needs iterations. Claude Code: the author's bread and butter - the 40+ apps on tigzig.com have been built, maintained, and are defended by Claude Code (earlier Cursor); also solid for ML models with diagnostics reviewed as HTML reports, though the author tends to prefer CC over Cowork for that. Claude Design: rarely used - Claude Code or Cowork are faster for report and deck templates, Claude Design is overkill.
