# How many jobs does the US need to add each month?

**Fewer than it used to.** Economists quoted by Reuters put the number of jobs the US needs each month at **about 50,000** in 2026. RBC puts it at **20,000**. It fell because fewer people are joining the labour force: more people are retiring and fewer immigrants are arriving.

**Where the US stands against it.** September 2026 added **29,000** jobs on the first estimate. The last three months averaged **51,000**. Unemployment was 4.2%, and it has eased this year partly because the labour force is growing slowly.

**Where the jobs came from.** Health care and social assistance have added more jobs than the whole economy over the past two years. Outside them, monthly job gains fell from 126,000 in 2023 to about zero. One month drags that down: federal payrolls fell about 166,000 in October 2025 as staff who took a 2025 resignation offer came off the payroll. Leave that month out and jobs outside health care grew about 15,000 a month.

**The first numbers keep coming in high.** The twelve months to August 2026 add up to **543,000** jobs on current data, down from 827,000 as first reported. First reports have been revised down four years in a row, the longest run in records back to 1956. September is a first estimate and will be revised twice more. Reuters reports economists noting that payrolls tend to come in weak when Labor Day falls late, as it did in 2026.
