# What did the IMF warn about in October 2026?

**Three risks that could set off market turmoil, in a report that says markets have been resilient but financial stability risks remain elevated.** The IMF's October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report names them:

- **An AI-related correction**, if AI investment and profits turn out weaker or less durable than priced, amplified by rising leverage and concentrated exposures.

- **A sharp rise in sovereign bond yields**, from resurgent inflation or fiscal worries.

- **Cyber attacks**, a growing risk as finance becomes more digital and interconnected.

In its own trend column, the IMF sees the bond yield and cyber risks rising and the AI risk about the same.

**The circular AI deals.** The IMF counts 14 publicly disclosed deals since 2023. About 300 billion dollars of equity, led by the hyperscalers, went into financially weaker AI firms, alongside 650 billion dollars of debt. In return the investors secured 1.4 trillion dollars of future orders for services and chips. The IMF calls this wrong-way risk: the equity and the loans lose value at the same time as the orders tied to them.

**The same week, AI credit came under strain.**

- CoreWeave shares fell 25% in the week to 16 October. The cost of insuring its debt passed 1,000 basis points, which Reuters converts to a 64% chance of default within five years, from about 30% a year earlier. Insurance prices include a premium for risk, so they tend to run above the real chance of default.

- Oracle's five-year default insurance was 282 basis points on 15 October (CNBC), against 139 in December 2025.

- Brent closed at 109.86 dollars on 16 October, its highest since May.

- Ten-year government bond yields in the US, UK, Germany and Japan all reached their highest in 17 to 30 years during 2026.

**The cash flow behind it.** Free cash flow at the five hyperscalers (Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Oracle) fell from about 70 billion dollars in the September 2023 quarter to about 2.2 billion in the June 2026 quarter. Their debt rose from about 259 billion to 483 billion dollars over the same period. Their equity grew faster than their debt, so the strain shows in cash flow more than on their balance sheets.

**What is holding.** The IMF raised its 2026 world growth forecast to 3.1%, banks stay broadly resilient in its stress test, and household debt burdens have eased. Those forecasts assume oil averages 96 dollars a barrel in 2026. In its sharp AI unwind scenario, world output falls by 0.4% by 2028 directly and by 1.1% once falling asset prices and higher yields are added.
