Who is warning about AI debt and returns, and what are they saying?

Five big names in one month. In October 2026, S&P Global Ratings, Gartner, Morgan Stanley, the IMF and the World Bank all warned about AI debt and returns:

Credit markets are pricing it. Insurance on CoreWeave's debt, its credit default swap, is above 1,000 basis points, a level seen as distress. Oracle's was 308 basis points on 21 October, up from 141 in January, per CNBC and FactSet. These prices include a risk premium, so they run above the real chance of default.

Markets on 22 October. AI stocks fell from Seoul to New York and investors turned to Treasuries. The US 10-year yield fell 17 basis points to 4.97%, its biggest one-day fall since March 2023, per CNBC. The S&P 500 fell 1.2%, its worst day since July, per AP.

The counterpoints. S&P sees no disconnect that forces a rating change now. Gartner says the hyperscalers' wide revenue base could sustain AI spending for years. The IMF raised its 2026 world growth forecast to 3.1%. Its 1.1% hit to world GDP by 2028 assumes AI investment drops steeply and asset prices fall; the direct hit is 0.4%.
