Why don't RBI's sector credit figures add up to total bank credit?

Because they come from two different RBI returns. Total bank credit covers all banks. The sector figures (agriculture, industry, services, personal loans and the lines under them) come from a return filed by select banks that account for about 95% of non-food credit. So the sectors do not add up to the total, and RBI says so in the notes to its release. It has published the data this way since 2021.

In 2026 the two can also be measured from different dates. Since December 2025 the data is reported as of month-end, under the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act 2025. The year-earlier months still use the old reporting dates. For September 2025 that is 3 October 2025 for the total and 19 September 2025 for the sectors.

What that does to September 2026. Total bank credit was Rs 229.9 lakh crore, up 19.4% on 3 October 2025, which is RBI's headline. Non-food credit is up 19.1% on the same date. The four sector groups together are up about 21% on 19 September 2025, so this September the sector growth rates run about 2 points above the headline. Two examples, both measured from 19 September: bank lending to NBFCs is up 41.8% and loans against gold jewellery 82.6%.

The date gap closes on its own. From the December 2026 data both years are month-end. The two-return difference stays.

How to handle it. Compare sectors with sectors and the total with the total, and read the as-of date on each figure before you set a sector's growth beside the headline. Two smaller points. RBI restated total bank credit to the all-bank basis for April 2019 to March 2021 and not before, so the totals step up at April 2019. And RBI revises earlier months, so work from the latest file.
