AI Chatter
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini are fine for asking questions. Yes, they can generate code and do Python things. But that's no longer enough.
An AI coworker
- Different. Can connect to external systems, pull data, run analysis and models, build decks, automate and more. Pretty much a full-fledged working assistant.
- You can have it check the work your team sends over or create rapid prototypes instead of lengthy calls with teams.
- Claude Cowork and recently launched ChatGPT Work fall in this category.
AI coders
- Tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor.
- AI workers have limitations. AI coders have much greater access and can do all that an AI worker can do plus complex models, scrapes, full-stack apps from build to deployment.
- Pretty much like a data science, research and tech team combined.
How to start
- Install Claude or ChatGPT desktop App and login with your current plan.
- Try things out. Learn as you go. There is no rocket science here.
- Share my Cowork PDF guide (link below) with it and have it guide you with test cases and examples. They are great tutors. They will teach you to work with them. You just need to ask.

Cost
- Both start at $20, top out at $200 per month. The $20 plan is good only for very light usage, serious work is $100, heavy work is $200.
- ChatGPT has a free plan with limits and an $8 plan.
- There are team plans too, up to 150 users you get flat per seat pricing with usage included, and the premium seat covers Claude Code and Cowork.
The economics
Claude Code is my primary tool as a freelancer, from models to full-stack apps. And lately Cowork also. The ROI is a no-brainer for me. I've 'moved' 2 business clients to Claude Code and the impact in their own words has been a 'game-changer'.
Enterprises
That's a different beast. The enterprise tier is a seat fee plus usage billed at API rates, not the flat team pricing. The individual $200 plan is subsidized with usage included, whereas that same heavy usage metered at API rates can run into thousands per person per month, easily the $8K to $15K range or more if you push it hard. That's a different game. But they have an army of folks to figure it out.
